Auditions for "The Miracle Worker" August 17 & 18

Auditions for "The Miracle Worker" August 17 & 18

Open auditions for The Miracle Worker, the first show in our 2014-15 main-series season, will be at the theatre on August 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. Callbacks, if needed, will be Tuesday, August 19. The first read-through will be Wednesday, August 20. Performances are September 26-28 and October 2-5.

Those wishing to audition are asked to bring a headshot and wear hard-soled shoes (no tennis shoes or flip-flops, please). Females are also asked to bring a long rehearsal skirt. The audition will consist mainly of cold readings from the script. Those auditioning for the roles of Annie and Helen should expect to participate in movement work and some improvisation.

Roles for students include James (Helen's teenaged half-brother), the son and daughter of the family servant (who are playmates for Helen) and several girls (ages 8-17) at the Perkins School for the Blind.

The role of Helen Keller (lost both sight and hearing as a result of high fever during a babyhood illness) could be played by a student or a very young adult. Other roles include Annie Sullivan (teacher, herself blind during her childhood), Captain Arthur Keller (Helen's father, retired Civil War officer who edits a town newspaper), Kate Keller (second wife of Captain Keller and mother of Helen), Aunt Ev (Captain Keller's sister), Viney (the Keller family servant) and a male servant.

Our guest director is Mitch Baker, a native Texan who received his BFA and MA in directing from Texas State University in San Marcos. He also earned an MFA from the University of Cincinnati/College Conservatory of Music. He has worked as Director and Costume Designer with Mill Mountain Theatre, Opera Roanoke, Shenandoah University. University of Michigan-Flint, University of Texas at El Paso, Theatre Memphis and several smaller theatres and schools around the country.

Cabaret, Don't Hurt the Daisies and A Christmas Carol are among three of his favorite shows he has directed, and each one was awarded The Milton Leech Award for best production. Mitch has also written a couple of plays and is currently working on a musical and a youth novel.
