Meet TCT's New Managing & Artistic Director, John Monteverde

John Monteverde, Temple Civic Theatre's new Managing and Artistic Director, comes to us from Portland, Oregon, where he has directed over 70 productions. He arrived in Temple on September 4, just in time for auditions for the first main-series show of the season, Count Dracula.

John holds a B.A. in theatre from the University of Washington and is currently completing his Masters in Education from Marylhurst University. His awards and honors include the Winifred Ward Award for Outstanding New Children's Theatre from the American Alliance of Theater and Education in 1996 and the Oregon Book Award's Walt Morey Young Readers Literary Legacy Award in 2006.

As founder of the Blue Monkey Theater Co., some of his favorite shows included Romeo and Juliet, The Wrestling Season, Night of the Living Dead, columbinus, Altar Boyz and The Breakfast Club.

Prior to founding that company, John was also founding artistic director of the Northwest Children's Theater in Portland. Over his 13 years there, some of his favorite productions included Peter Pan, The Arabian Nights (world premiere), Frankenstein, A Christmas Carol, The Outsiders, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Miracle Worker and The Three Musketeers.

He has guest directed both in his hometown and across the country with such productions as Zombie Prom (Tin Pan Alley Theatre), Our Town (Mount Hood Repertory Theater), The Importance of Being Earnest (Northwest Classical Theatre Company), Fame (Rocky Mountain Theater for Youth), The Hobbit (Pennsylvania Youth Theatre) and Henry IV, part 1 and The Merry Wives of Windsor (Portland Actor's Ensemble, Shakespeare in the Park).

John is passionate about mentoring young artists and has developed teen internship programs at both of his companies while directing and teaching at local area high schools, where productions included Legally Blonde, All in the Timing and Footloose (Riverdale High School) and The Odyssey (Arts & Communications Magnet Academy).
