Comedic Spoof of Alfred Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps" Begins May 19

Comedic Spoof of Alfred Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps" Begins May 19

Our next main-series production, The 39 Steps, is a comedic spoof of the classic 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film. Performances are May 19, 20, 26, 27 (8 p.m.), May 25 (7 p.m.) and May 21 and 28 (2:30 p.m.)

The brilliantly madcap story follows our dashing hero, Richard Hannay (Scott Searles), as he races to solve the mystery of The 39 Steps. Kayla Stewart plays the part of three different women with three different accents. Darren Walker and Jonathan Spear play every other character in the show (heroes, villains, men, and women). In the script, they are referred to as the two clowns.

Reserved seat tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students and children. They are available online 24/7. The box office, staffed by a live person, opened on Tuesday, May 9. Box office hours are Tuesday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and one hour before each performance.

Production staff includes Natasha Tolleson, director; Leon Perkins, stage manager; Ryan Beimer, technical director; Tim Locke, costume designer; Tanya McMillan, hair and make-up designer; Jesse Wyman, lighting designer; and Jody Donaldson, sound designer. The running crew and dressers include Callie Dennis, Lily Johnson, Robert Solar, Charles Wilson, Sam Wilds, Caitlin Richardson, Rebecca Johnson and Jennifer Murphy.

The film's serious spy story is played mainly for laughs, and the script is full of allusions to (and puns on the titles of) other Alfred Hitchcock films, including Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and North by Northwest.

The 2008 Roundabout Broadway production won the 2008 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience. It also won two Tony Awards and was nominated for four other Tonys.
